UPSC Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2023:- The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive examination in India for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others. The UPSC CSE syllabus is divided into two stages: the Preliminary Exam (also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT) and the Main Exam.

Preliminary Exam Syllabus:

  1. Current events of national and international importance.
  2. History of India and Indian National Movement.
  3. Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  4. Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  5. Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  6. General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.
  7. General Science.

Main Exam Syllabus:

  1. Paper I: Essay writing
  2. Paper II: General Studies I – Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.
  3. Paper III: General Studies II – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations.
  4. Paper IV: General Studies III – Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
  5. Paper V: General Studies IV – Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
  6. Paper VI-IX: Optional Subject Paper 1 & 2 (choose any one subject from the list of optional subjects).
  7. Paper X: English (Qualifying Paper) – Candidates have to secure minimum 33% marks in this paper.

UPSC Exam Pattern 2023

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in two stages: the Preliminary Exam and the Main Exam. The following is the examination pattern for the UPSC CSE as of 2023:

Preliminary Exam:

    • The preliminary exam consists of two papers of objective type (multiple choice questions), each of 200 marks and a duration of 2 hours.
    • Paper 1: General Studies (GS) Paper I, which covers subjects such as Current Events of National and International Importance, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, and General Science.
    • Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), which assesses the aptitude of the candidates in areas such as comprehension, logical reasoning, and problem-solving.
    • The marks obtained in the preliminary exam are not considered for the final selection.
    • Only those candidates who qualify in the preliminary exam by securing the minimum qualifying marks are eligible to appear for the Main Exam.

Main Exam:

    • The Main Exam consists of 9 papers, including 7 written papers and 2 interview/personality test.
    • The written examination is divided into two parts: the qualifying papers (Paper A and Paper B) and the main examination papers (Paper I to Paper VII).
    • The written examination is conducted over a period of 5-6 days and is of 1750 marks in total.
    • The interview/personality test, also known as the Personality Test or the Service Selection Board (SSB) Interview, is conducted by the UPSC and is of 275 marks.
